The Youth Philharmonic is the SCPYO's most advanced full orchestra for musicians with 4+ years playing experience. They perform professional-level repertoire and occasionally side-by-side the South Carolina Philharmonic.

The Youth Philharmonic meets from 3:00 to 5:00 pm at the UofSC School of Music.

Audition Requirements

All auditions require scales, solo piece, sight-reading and a set list of excerpts. Please review your instrument requirements listed below. For any questions email us at SCPYO@scphilharmonic.com.

Excerpts: Please review all excerpts for your instrument. Not all excerpts may be asked for in the audition.

Three-octave scales: One-quarter note per scale degree, quarter note=80

All strings will prepare the following three-octave scales:

  • C major & C melodic minor
  • G major & G melodic minor
  • D major & D melodic minor 

Solo Requirement: Prepare a solo piece of choice that will showcase your technique, musicality, and overall playing ability.

Required Sight-Reading: All students will be required to sight-read a brief passage at their audition.

Scale Requirement:

  • Winds/Brass: Prepare all SCBDA All-State Senior Band Audition scales. One scale will be chosen at the audition to perform
  • Percussion: F, Gb, G, Ab, A, Bb, B, C, Db, D, Eb, E (2 octaves). One scale will be chosen at the audition to perform.

Solo Requirement: Prepare a solo piece of choice that will showcase your technique, musicality, and overall playing ability.

Sight-reading Requirement: All students will be required to sight-read a brief passage at their audition.

 

Auditions

We are accepting video auditions until Thursday, September 15. Auditions should be uploaded to YouTube and shared via private link on the form below.

Video should include what the student can prepare of the following requirements:

  • Scales
  • Excerpt
  • Solo of student's choosing

Videos should be unedited and not exceed 10 minutes.
