Thoughts from Morihiko

“When I was in sixth grade, the music of Mozart ignited my lifelong love for classical music. Before that time, I had studied piano at home and enjoyed my music classes at school, but music was not something I felt passionate about – like baseball or history. It all changed one day, when I heard this incredibly beautiful music on the radio – Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 23. My 'research' into this composer led me to his Clarinet Quintet which promptly made me beg my mother for a Yamaha student-model clarinet. So began my formal training in music.

I’m certain that many of you can recount moments like this, when you first realized your love for music. Perhaps Mozart plays a role in many of your stories. On this program, we highlight some of Mozart’s crowning achievements as an orchestral composer. Doug Graham, our incomparable principal clarinetist, joins the orchestra in the autumnal glow of the Mozart Clarinet Concerto. The winner of the annual Arthur Fraser Competition performs a movement of Mozart’s piano concerto – one prodigy performing the music of the most famous prodigy. Mozart’s final symphony – the inventive, grandiose 'Jupiter' – closes the evening. French composer Gabriel Faure’s homage to Mozart’s time, Masques et beergamasques, opens this special concert.”
