Philharmonic, Hicks begin New Year with ‘New World’

COLUMBIA, S.C. – An evening of blockbuster repertoire awaits the audience when Sarah Hatsuko Hicks conducts the 7 p.m. South Carolina Philharmonic concert at the Koger Center on Jan. 19, 2008.

The SCP’s “Magnificent Seven” music director search season continues as Hicks takes her turn on the podium for the Master Series concert.

It’s an evening of blockbuster repertoire, the highlight being Antonín Dvořák’s classic Ninth Symphony, “From the New World,” with its influences from Native American and African-American traditional music. Jennifer Higdon’s contemporary blue cathedral, also on the program, is one of the most performed works by a living composer. The work was composed as a memorial to Higdon’s brother, who died at 33.

Violinist Rachel Lee makes a return appearance with the SCP, this time to perform the Barber Violin Concerto. A 19-year-old Harvard student who studies with Itzhak Perlman, Lee already boasts appearances with the Seattle and Chicago symphonies and the National Symphony Orchestra and recently made her European debut in Berlin. Her SCP appearance is sponsored by BB&T.

Sarah Hatsuko Hicks joined the Minnesota Orchestra as assistant conductor in the 2006/2007 season while completing her tenure as associate conductor of the Richmond Symphony Orchestra. Her past positions include resident conductor of the Florida Philharmonic and assistant conductor of the Reading Symphony. She has guest conducting appearances with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, National Symphony Orchestra, Charleston Symphony, Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia and the Silesian Philarmonic of Poland. A committed proponent of new music, she regularly leads recordings and performances of new works at the Curtis Institute of Music, where she is staff conductor.

Born in Tokyo and raised in Honolulu, Hicks has studied with Otto-Werner Mueller, Charles Bruch and Leonard Slatkin. She received her BA magna cum laude in composition from Harvard and holds an artists’ degree in conducting from the Curtis Institute. She is sponsored by SCE&G.

Hicks presents Classical Conversations at 6:20 p.m. in the Koger Center Large Rehearsal Room, offering ticket holders her unique insight into the evening’s program.

Available online at www.capitoltickets.com or by phone at 803.251.2222, tickets are $40, $32, $23, $16 and $13. Southern Valet provides valet parking for just $6.
