Nakahara Continues Philharmonic's
"Magnificent Seven" Season

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The South Carolina Philharmonic’s music director search season continues as finalist Morihiko Nakahara takes his turn on the podium Saturday, Oct. 13, 7 p.m. at the Koger Center.

The season’s second Master Series concert features a theme of dance, which is one Nakahara enjoys.

Programmed are Osvaldo Golijov’s Last Round, a recent piece which is an homage to modern tango master Astor Piazzolla, the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto and suites 1 and 2 from Prokofiev’s Romeo & Juliet ballet music.

Violinist John McLaughlin Williams joins Nakahara and the orchestra for the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto. A member of the Houston Symphony, Williams is concertmaster of the Virginia Symphony and last appeared as a soloist with the SCP in 1993. He has a Grammy award to his credit, winning the award for conducting in 2007.

A native of Kagoshima, Japan, Nakahara holds degrees from Andrews University and the University of Cincinnati College - Conservatory of Music. He studied conducting with Rodney Winther, Timothy Muffitt, Mark Gibson, Lawrence Leighton Smith, Larry Rachleff and Alan Mitchell, among others.

This September, Nakahara became associate conductor of the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra and has been associate conductor of the Spokane Symphony Orchestra and director of orchestras at Eastern Washington University since 2003. During the summer of 2007, Nakahara guest conducted the Young Artists Orchestra at the Boston University Tanglewood Institute. Other recent guest conducting appearances include the Missoula Symphony Orchestra and the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra. An emerging talent among the younger generation of conductors, Nakahara was featured in the American Symphony Orchestra League’s National Conductor Preview in March 2005.

Nakahara presents Classical Conversations at 6:20 p.m. in the Koger Center Large Rehearsal Room, offering ticket holders his unique insight into the evening’s program.

Available online at www.capitoltickets.com or by phone at 803.251.2222, tickets are $40, $32, $23, $16 and $13. Southern Valet provides valet parking for just $6.
