FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Philharmonic season nowhere near Flatt-lining

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The South Carolina Philharmonic’s music director search nears an exciting crescendo as Adam Flatt of Colorado takes his turn on the Koger Center podium Saturday, March 15 at 7 p.m.

Flatt has programmed a concert that he says highlights “the brilliance and color of dance” for the Master Series concert. Included are Adams’ The Chairman Dances, with an imagined scenario of China’s Chairman Mao being incited to dance by his wife Jiang Qing during President Nixon’s visit to the country in 1972. Rachmaninoff’s Symphonic Dances, the composer’s last, and often considered best work, is also programmed.

Charleston-based pianist Enrique Graf, a veteran of South Carolina and world stages, makes his SCP debut with the Ravel Piano Concerto. Graf, born in Uruguay and now a U.S. citizen, founded and is artistic director of the International Piano Series in Charleston and is university artist-in-residence at the College of Charleston. He has performed in concert halls with notable symphonies across the U.S. and in Europe and South America and has several recordings to his credit. His appearance is sponsored by Cox & Dinkins, Inc.

Recently named principal conductor of Emerald City Opera, a summer festival in Steamboat Springs, Colo., Adam Flatt is recognized for his ability to reach out and connect with diverse audiences. He recently completed a five-year tenure as associate conductor of the Colorado Symphony in Denver, where he led over 250 classical, family, outreach, gala and educational performances.

He serves as music director of the Denver Young Artists Orchestra, leading that ensemble in performances in Denver and on international tours to Europe and South America. Guest conducting appearances include the Dallas, Houston, Delaware, Alabama and Santa Rosa symphonies, Sacramento Philharmonic and the Colorado, Green and Strings in the Mountains music festivals. In Europe, Flatt has appeared with the Saarland Conservatory Orchestra and the Thuringian Chamber Orchestra of Weimar. He has been broadcast on National Public Radio’s "Performance Today." In 2003 he led a hugely successful live television broadcast of the Colorado Symphony's "Spirit of the Season," which has since become an annual holiday broadcast.

A Sacramento native, Flatt holds a bachelor's degree from the University of California at Berkeley, where he received the Alfred Hertz Fellowship, and a master's degree in conducting from the Indiana University School of Music. He studied in Austria and Germany for two years.

Flatt presents Classical Conversations at 6:20 p.m. in the Koger Center Large Rehearsal Room, offering ticket holders his unique insight into the evening’s program.

Available online at www.capitoltickets.com or by phone at 803.251.2222, tickets are $40, $32, $23, $16 and $13. Southern Valet provides valet parking for just $6.
