MEDIA CONTACT 13 MARCH 2008 Burns, violins highlight COLUMBIA , S.C. – Finalist Miriam Burns and 38 painted instruments close the South Carolina Philharmonic’s first music director search since 1992 on Saturday, April 5, 7 p.m. at the Koger Center. Burns, the seventh and final candidate to be the SCP’s next music director, closes the “Magnificent Seven” season. She presents the Ligeti Concert Romanesc, making its South Carolina debut, and Tchaikovsky’s exuberant and emotional Fourth Symphony. Also, pianist Esther Budiardjo returns to make a second appearance with the SCP, this time to perform the Mozart Piano Concerto No. 23. Born in Jakarta, Indonesia but residing now in Vancouver, British Columbia, Budiardjo has performed extensively across North America and Southeast Asia and has received international acclaim for her recordings for Pro Piano Records. She is sponsored by Dr. & Mrs. Robert E. Robinson. The Master Series concert also features the end of bidding in the third annual Painted Violins fundraiser, which directly supports the orchestra. Painted Violins includes other instruments for the first time in 2008, with violas, a cello and a flute also being magically transformed by Midlands artists. All 38 instruments will be displayed and open for bidding in the Koger Center lobby before the concert and at intermission, when the silent auction closes. Appointed to the cover conducting staff of the New York Philharmonic in 1999, Miriam Burns is also the music director for the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra, the Kenosha Symphony and the Orchestra of the Redeemer. Former posts include the Lawton Philharmonic; the C.W. Post Music Festival, where she also taught conducting; and the Bronx Opera Company. International guest conducting includes appearances with the Bournemouth Symphony in Germany, the First Ladies Symphony Orchestra of Poland and the YinQi Symphony Orchestra of Taiwan. Burns has received conducting awards from the Aspen Music Festival and the Conductor’s Guild. Previously a professional violinist, Burns holds both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in violin performance and orchestral conducting from Mannes College of Music, as well as an Artist Diploma from the Yale School of Music. Burns presents Classical Conversations at 6:20 p.m. in the Koger Center Large Rehearsal Room, offering ticket holders her unique insight into the evening’s program.
