Violins to give additional vibrancy
to Columbia’s spring

COLUMBIA, S.C. – What is becoming an annual rite of spring will once again take place in 2008 when 38 artists magically transform violins to raise money for the South Carolina Philharmonic.

The Philharmonic’s third annual Painted Violins fundraiser kicks off in March when 38 instruments, including violins, violas, a cello and even a flute are displayed throughout Columbia’s Vista . Renowned artists were recruited from around the Midlands to transform the instruments into pieces of art of different media by painting them, featuring them in sculpture or decorating them however the artist is inspired.

The artists for 2008 are Sylvia Ady-Potts, Barbara Alston-Yongue, Paula Bowers, Lee Breuer, Warren Brussee, Ingrid Carson, Jeremy Carter, Anastasia Chernoff, Rita Ruth Cockrell, Cindia Deith Kirby, Colin Dodd, Linda Dye, Jan Fleetwood, Dylan Fouste, Diane Gilbert, E. Stan Harp, Mary Ann Haven, Doni Jordan & Janette Grassi, Sharon Licata, Melissa Ligon, Kristina Mandell, Michel McNinch, Lee Monts, Roy Paskel, Richard Christopher Patterson, David Phillips, Leslie Pierce, Carolyn Ramsay, Kathryn Ramsby, Grace Rockafellow, Lani Stringer, Ben Truesdale, Toni Turbeville, Gay Vogt, Richard Vogt, Edward Whitmer, Lindsay R. Wiggins and Juanita Yancey.

In addition to being displayed separately throughout the Vista, the violins will be showcased together twice: for a preview show at the Vista’s City Art gallery on April 3 and during the Philharmonic’s last Master Series concert of the season, 7 p.m. at the Koger Center on April 5.

The Philharmonic will accept bids at the City Art preview show, at the April 5 concert and at the SCP office suite at 1237 Gadsden Street in the Vista. All proceeds will benefit the SCP.

Presenting sponsor for the 2008 Painted Violins is PHT Services, Ltd. Additional sponsors are the Congaree Vista Guild, City Art, Dupre/Dukes Signature Catering, LaserPrint Plus, Musician Supply, Mustard Graphics Studio, Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough, Star Music, Stentor Violins, photographer Les Stringer and TPM Printing.
