MEDIA CONTACT 28 January 2008 Philharmonic’s Kolkay makes Symphony magazine cover COLUMBIA, S.C. – You wouldn’t know Peter Kolkay was assigned his instrument in sixth grade, especially if you’ve seen him as South Carolina Philharmonic principal bassoonist or on the latest Symphony magazine cover. Kolkay, 31, is recognized as one of six up and coming artists in the nation in the cover story “Young Artists Make Their Moves,” part of the January/February issue of Symphony magazine. In the story, Kolkay describes how he ended up playing bassoon after an unsuccessful attempt with the oboe , plus some of his favorite memories from his career to this point and where he sees his career going. About the story, Kolkay said, “ I'm thrilled to be included on the cover of Symphony magazine – to be profiled in the company of other amazing musicians is an honor, and I'm excited about all the exposure that the magazine's article has given me. I hope I'll bring more attention to the bassoon as a solo instrument and the fact that there are musicians out there making careers for themselves without living in New York.” Kolkay is in his second year teaching at USC and in his second year playing with the Philharmonic. “It’s an excellent ensemble with so much potential for future growth, and I think the excitement generated by the search for the music director is bringing vitality to both the orchestra and our audiences,” Kolkay said. ### The entire article can be viewed here: Photos of Kolkay are available here: |
