MEDIA CONTACT 17 January 2008 Commanday, Philharmonic invite audience COLUMBIA, S.C. – Music director finalist David Commanday brings a theme of dance for his turn on the South Carolina Philharmonic’s podium Saturday, Feb. 9, 7 p.m. at the Koger Center. The season’s fifth Master Series concert offers a colorful and emotionally satisfying variety of works, according to Commanday. Programmed are Debussy’s Prelude to “The Afternoon of a Faun,” Faure’s Pelleas & Melisande and the popular Stravinsky classic, The Firebird Suite (1919 version). Additionally, Ukrainian-born American pianist Inna Faliks joins Commanday to perform Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, a piece Commanday says has a “virile, magical theme.” Faliks received the 2005 Pro Musicis International Award in New York and the 2005 St. Charles International Piano Competition grand prize. She made her debut with the Chicago Symphony at age 15 and made her Carnegie Hall debut in 2000. Her appearance is sponsored by PHT Services, Ltd. Patrons attending the concert are urged to bring loose change, which will be collected in the lobby during the concert. The SCP is proud to once again be a Change Bandit for the b106.7-FM Radiothon which, in conjunction with the Children’s Miracle Network, benefits the Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital. The SCP will also collect change at its Vista office throughout the month of February. Currently music director of the Peoria Symphony, Commanday’s prior posts include associate conductor of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, music director of the Boston Ballet and music director of the Greater Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras. A recipient of three ASCAP awards for programming, he has commissioned and conducted numerous world premieres, including the Grawemeyer Award-winning Tcherepnin Double Concerto. He has guest-conducted the Atlanta, Seattle, and Richmond symphonies, the Vienna Tonkuenstler Orchestra, the Israel Philharmonic, the National Symphony, the Belgian Radio Orchestra and the Las Vegas Philharmonic. He continues to perform as cellist in chamber and solo works. A Harvard University graduate, Commanday trained in conducting at the Vienna Hochschule fuer Musik, where he earned the Austrian Staatsdiplom with highest honors.
