FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

‘Magnificent Seven’ Search Season
Begins in September

COLUMBIA , S.C. – A season of change begins Saturday, Sept. 22, 2007 as the South Carolina Philharmonic starts holding very public auditions for the seven finalists named in its music director search.

The auditions are actually the seven concerts that make up the SCP’s 2007/2008 Master Series. Each finalist gets one chance to conduct the orchestra and a guest artist, several of whom will be familiar to SCP audiences, through a program he or she selected.

Finalist Steven Lipsitt gets the new season underway Saturday, Sept . 22, 2007. A Bostonian, Lipsitt will have the three yet-to-be-determined winners from the 2007 Southeastern Piano Festival’s Arthur Fraser Concerto Competition performing that evening. The concert has a special start time of 8 p.m.

Spokane’s Morihiko Nakahara will conduct Oct. 13, 2007 when John McLaughlin Williams, a 2007 Grammy winner for conducting, returns playing violin. Carolyn Kuan of Seattle conducts on Nov. 10, 2007 when violinist Lee-Chin Siow of Charleston appears.

The season continues after the holidays on Jan. 19, 2008 when Sarah Hatsuko Hicks, a native of Tokyo, conducts. Her guest artist will be violinist Rachel Lee, who makes her second appearance with the SCP. David Commanday of Peoria conducts on Feb. 9, 2008 for pianist Inna Faliks’ debut with the SCP, and likewise Denver’s Adam Flatt for pianist Enrique Graf’s SCP debut on March 15, 2008. New York’s Miriam Burns closes the season on April 9, 2008, conducting when pianist Esther Budiardjo returns to perform with the SCP.

Works to be performed during the season range from classical standards such as the Dvorak Ninth Symphony, “From the New World,” Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite and the Brahms Academic Festival Overture to modern selections like Jennifer Higdon’s Blue Cathedral, the Barber Violin Concerto and Osvaldo Golijov’s Last Round.

All concerts except Master Series 1 begin at 7 p.m. in downtown Columbia’s Koger Center for the Arts. The seven guest conductors will continue a popular SCP tradition by holding Classical Conversations 40 minutes prior to each concert in the Koger Center’s Large Rehearsal Room. The brief lectures introduce interested concert-goers to the evening’s program and allow the conductors to give their unique insight into the music.

Season subscriptions for the SCP are on sale now through the Philharmonic Box Office at 803.254.PHIL (7445) or www.SCPhilharmonic.com. The prices range from $78 to $246, depending on seat location, and reflect discounts of as much as 20 percent over single-ticket costs. Discounts are available for seniors (65 and older), students/children and active-duty and retired members of the U.S. military.

New for the 2007/2008 season, Capitol Tickets is now the exclusive seller of SCP single tickets beginning Monday, Aug. 20, 2007 at 9 a.m. Available online at www.capitoltickets.com or by phone at 803.251.2222, tickets are $40, $32, $23, $16 and $13.
