"Where in the Midlands is Morihiko?" is back!
COLUMBIA, S.C. – Grant funding is allowing the South Carolina Philharmonic to resurrect the “Where in the Midlands is Morihiko?” Recital Series, creating seven free, small ensemble mini-concerts throughout the Midlands in 2010/2011.
“Where in the Midlands is Morihiko?” began during the SCP’s 2008/2009 season, with the help of the Pierrine & Hootie Johnson Fund and Central Carolina Community Foundation, as a way to introduce Nakahara to the Midlands during his first season as the SCP’s music director. Concerts that season took place at venues such as the Robert Mills House, the corner of Lady and Main streets and Allen University in Columbia and the Flight Deck Plaza in Lexington.
A $10,000 grant from the Pierrine & Hootie Johnson Fund through Central Carolina Community Foundation provided funding to allow Music Director Morihiko Nakahara and small ensembles of SCP musicians to venture into the community to perform free, one-hour public concerts around the Midlands leading up to each 2010/2011 Masterworks Series concert. Locations for the seven concerts have been strategically selected to reach out to people who might be unfamiliar with the SCP and what it offers the community.
The Recital Series has a twist for the new season, however. The actual dates, times and locations of each mini-concert will be kept a mystery until 24 hours before each begins.
Using social media outlets like its Facebook fan page
and Twitter feed (SCPhil
), as well as its web site (SCPhilharmonic.com) and free email newsletter Symphon-E-Notes
, the SCP is going to provide clues as to the locations via each outlet leading up to the 24-hour mark, when the same outlets will be used to reveal the location and when each concert begins.
