Nakahara agrees to contract renewal
Deal keeps music director with SCP into 2010.
COLUMBIA, S.C. – The South Carolina Philharmonic announced that Music Director Morihiko Nakahara agreed to a four-year contract renewal that keeps Nakahara with the SCP through the 2014/2015 season.
SCP Board of Directors Thomas R. Gottshall, Esq. made the announcement from stage at the April 24th Masterworks concert, which completed Nakahara’s second season with the orchestra. His original contract was scheduled to run out following the upcoming 2010/2011 season.
The SCP named Nakahara the fifth music director in its 46-year history in spring 2008 after a multi-year search process yielded 232 applicants from six continents. Seven finalists were named and each conducted “audition” concerts in the Masterworks Series during the 2007/2008 season before Nakahara was unanimously selected for the position by the search committee.
The orchestra begins its 47th season on Thursday, Sept. 16 at 7:30 p.m. in the Koger Center. The extension means Nakahara will conduct the orchestra during its 50th anniversary season of 2013/2014.

“As far as decisions are concerned, this was an easy one to call,” Nakahara said. “First of all, I'm very much in love with this orchestra. After the first two seasons, the orchestra and I understand and communicate with each other musically at a much deeper level, always adding more refinement and nuances while maintaining the excitement and chemistry of our first meeting.”
“In addition, I have the privilege of working together with an administrative staff unparalleled in this industry for its passion and creativity, as well as with our dedicated board and tireless group of volunteers.”
“Last, but certainly not the least, we're so fortunate to share the music with our audience. At every concert, the orchestra and I are inspired and energized by their enthusiasm, warmth and curiosity. All in all, this is a perfect setting for me, and I'm excited about growing together with this organization over the next several years.”

"We are very pleased to announce that Music Director Morihiko Nakahara has agreed to an additional four years with the S.C. Philharmonic. His original contract comes to a conclusion with the end of next year's season (2010/2011). An additional four years will have him with us through the 2014/2015 season. This means Morihiko will conduct the orchestra during our 50th anniversary season of 2013/2014.”
Rhonda P. Hunsinger, Executive Director, SCP
“We couldn’t be more pleased that Morihiko agreed to renew his contract. Feedback from our audience and musicians has been overwhelmingly positive, and we are looking forward to future seasons of exciting programming and continued artistic growth.”
