Painted Violins returning in March

Visual and performance art combine again when “Painted Violins” returns Thursday, March 7 at the Anastasia and Friend Gallery during First Thursdays on Main from 6 to 9 p.m.

Eighteen area artists, both returning favorites and new, were challenged to transform 15 violins and, new in 2013, six guitars into unique works of art. The instruments will be a gallery exhibit at the Anastasia and Friends Gallery from March 7-31, during which time bids on each work will be accepted through a silent auction. Proceeds from the auction benefit the South Carolina Philharmonic.

Painted Violins 2013 is led by gallery host Anastasia Chernoff in conjunction with the SCP. Participating artists include Bohumila Augustinova, Jarid Lyfe Brown (Anna, right, new in 2013), Robin Gadient, Doni Jordan, and Lindsay Wiggins.

Public display of the 2013 Painted Violins begins with an opening reception in conjunction with First Thursdays on Main, Thursday, March 7 at 6 p.m. at the Anastasia and Friends Gallery (1534 Main St., Columbia). Bidding begins at that time and runs through the closing reception Tuesday, April 9 at Gervais & Vine (620 Gervais St., Columbia) from 5 to 8 p.m. Both receptions are free and open to the public.

Since it began in 2006, Painted Violins has raised almost $30,000 for the SCP. Those proceeds enable SCP educational programs in and out of schools, put concerts on stage, and allow the orchestra to introduce disadvantaged students and their families to the live symphonic experience either free or at deeply-discounted prices.
