Philharmonic launches young professionals group

The South Carolina Philharmonic announces the launch of Notables of the SC Phil, a new organization to rally support from Midlands young professionals and connect them to the orchestra.

Notables of the SC Phil is open to anyone 21 to 39 years of age. Through backstage rehearsal visits; informal chats with SCP Music Director Morihiko Nakahara, musicians, and guest artists; pre- and post-concert social events and more, members get to show and grow their support for the 47-year-old orchestra while connecting with like-minded peers in the community.

Dues are $30 annually per member and entitle one to half-price SCP season subscriptions, free access to Notables events ($5-10 for non-members), and reduced admission to select non-concert SCP events.

Nicholas Annan of Columbia, 25, is serving as the group’s first board of directors president. Annan is a senior accountant with J.W. Hunt & Company, LLP.

“The South Carolina Philharmonic is one of Columbia's greatest cultural assets; presenting both an annual concert series as well as supporting invaluable music education programs. The primary goal of the Notables of the SC Phil is to make the SCP more accessible to a younger audience by providing a unique and exciting way for young professionals to connect with and support the SCP. Ultimately, the Notables hopes its members will become life-long patrons and supporters of the SC Phil,” Annan said.

There are three other current members of the Notables board of directors. They are:

  • Bill Hrisko of Columbia, 29, owner of Unforgettable Fine Jewelry (vice president)
  • Jason L. Rapp of Columbia, 31, communications and audience services director at the SCP (membership coordinator)
  • Sabra H. Smith of Columbia, 31, assistant clinical professor at USC College of Nursing and nurse practitioner at USC Immunology Center (events coordinator)

Notables of the SC Phil grew out of the SCP’s 2010/2011 season-long, behind-the-scenes young professionals program called Treblemakers, which was funded by a grant by the S.C. Arts Commission as part of a Statewide Arts Participation Initiative aimed at increasing participation in the arts.
