Presenting an all-new program for 2018

Since 2012, South Carolina 3rd through 5th graders have learned that the orchestra moves, rocks, and sings. New in 2018 ﹣ they'll learn that it also SWINGS as the S.C. Phil presents the new Carnegie Hall program The Orchestra Swings!, which debuted in 2017.

“Swing” is many things. It’s a distinctive rhythmic feel; a musical era dominated by big band jazz; a style of dance that grew alongside the music; and that elusive but unmistakable feeling that results when musicians are deeply tuned into each other and playing in sync, or “in the pocket.” Though swing is characteristically associated with jazz, an orchestra can also swing. Through the Link Up repertoire, hands-on activities, and a culminating interactive performance with a professional orchestra, we will explore the elements that contribute to that magical moment when the orchestra starts to swing.

Admission: $5.25 per person. Groups of 200+ are $4.75 per person.

The South Carolina Philharmonic partners with Carnegie Hall’s Weill Institute to present The Orchestra Swings!, a new, interactive experience for students in grades 3-5, in February 2018.

Young people in the audience will actually sing and play their recorder along to the music of the orchestra. This year's program explores rhythm, pulse, and groove, drawing on selected orchestra repertoire. Link Up provides a unique opportunity to connect classroom learning with a live performance. The optional curriculum will be available beginning in August 2017 and includes a host of musical selections from famed composers ﹣ classical and jazz alike!
