Thoughts from Morihiko
“Passion and drama fill the air as we kick off the 2011/2012 season. The centerpiece is Tchaikovsky’s final masterpiece, the “Pathétique” Symphony, premiered only nine days before his death. From a brooding opening to elegant waltz, savage march and final outpouring of soul, it is one of the most moving pieces in the symphonic repertoire.
Today Erich Korngold is remembered as an Oscar-winning composer of many Hollywood soundtracks from the ’30s and the ’40s. Deeply rooted in Romanticism and based on some of his film scores (including The Prince and the Pauper starring Errol Flynn), Korngold wrote his sumptuous and virtuosic Violin Concerto for Jascha Heifetz. I’m thrilled to be joined by Jennifer Frautschi, one of my favorite collaborators and a frequent guest with the Wadsworth Chamber Music series at the Columbia Museum of Art.
Mason Bates is one of many composers today successfully reaching new audiences for classical music by infusing new technologies into it. His Rusty Air in Carolina combines techno beats, recorded sounds of cicadas and katydids, white noise, and other sounds with a colorful orchestral writing to create a mesmerizing listening experience.”
Prices are $47, $39, $29, $21 or $17. Student and military discounts available.
