Nikos Skalkottas - Five Greek Dances
Celebrating the 2010 Greek Festival, Sept. 16-19

Copland - Suite from Appalachian Spring

Brahms  - Symphony No. 2

The SCP welcomes you to the “Face the Music” season with a concert that highlights the talented faces of the orchestra on a special night – Thursday!

Nikos Skalkottas’ “Five Greek Dances” pays musical tribute to the 24th annual Columbia Greek Festival (Sept. 16-19). Music from Copland’s famed Appalachian Spring takes us into intermission before we close with the enigmatic Brahms Second Symphony … equal parts pastoral, cheerful, melancholy and dramatic.

Thoughts from Morihiko:

“You might ask, why a Brahms symphony every year? My first answer: It’s just great music. Also, his four symphonies are essential for our orchestra’s artistic growth as a cohesive and spontaneous unit. So, we now come to his Second Symphony.  Even though the writers have often commented on its pastoral quality, it remains an enigmatic work – in turns melancholy, cheerful, nostalgic and dramatic. Beyond that, its prevailing characteristics of song and dance inspired the rest of this program. We celebrate the opening of the annual Columbia’s Greek Festival with the exotic set of dances by Skalkottas. I love the rhythmic energy and spacious harmonies of Copland’s Appalachian Spring. A somewhat unexpected pairing, perhaps, but it is a perfect way to kick off the season by featuring our great orchestra.”
